05-Jul-2001West Indian wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs has been suspended for threeOne Day Internationals against Kenya, on August 15, 16 and 19 as aresult of an incident during the Coca Cola Cup ODI against India atHarare on Wednesday. The incident involved a stumping of an Indianbatsman by Jacobs. The television reply showed that Jacobs had stumpedSehwag whilst the ball was clearly in Jacobs’ left hand which wasnowhere near the broken wicket.According to a press release from the Zimbabwe Cricket Union,International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Denis Lindsayconvened a hearing involving Jacobs, captain Carl Hooper, coach RogerHarper and team manager Ricky Skerritt, together with Zimbabwe CricketUnion CEO, Dave Ellman-Brown.The match referee found Jacobs guilty of a breach of the Players andTeam Officials Code C2, namely “Players and/or Team Officials shall atno time engage in conduct unbecoming to their status which could bringthem or the game of cricket into disrepute.”In addition, the match referee found Jacobs guilty of transgressingthe Spirit of Cricket point 5 of the Official ICC Laws of Cricket 2000Code, namely: “It is against the Spirit of the Game to indulge incheating or any sharp practice.” The match referee noted that whilstJacobs did not claim the stumping, he had more than ample opportunityto recall batsman Sehwag which he failed to do.
