da aposte e ganhe: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has endured a mixed start to the season for Everton, but the forward’s impact off the bench against Crystal Palace may have shown what the 21-year-old is all about.
Where has this performance been?
So far this season the young forward has featured in nine Everton fixtures, including four Premier League starts, but his early outings saw fans jump on his back with criticism.
Everton’s home defeat to West Ham certainly did the England U-20 man no help when he completed just 47% of his passes and lost the ball the joint-most times amongst the Toffees squad.

That level of, or rather lack of, accuracy will show up far more than the work rate which initially saw the 6 foot 2 attacker earn himself a consistent run in the Everton team.
Against Arsenal, Calvert-Lewin again started the match leading the line but failed to even take a shot on goal before being hauled off on 72 minutes, once again raising doubts over Marco Silva’s decision not to sign a goal scorer in the summer.
Maybe, however, playing Calvert-Lewin as the lone striker was the mistake.
A game-changing impact
It took all of five minutes for Calvert-Lewin and fellow 82nd minute substitute Ademola Lookman to connect with each other and break the deadlock against Crystal Palace.
Finding space in the box, the Sheffield United product hit the back of the net with an important header to put his side on top, before Everton scored again two minutes later to secure the result.
The opener, however, was the game-changing moment and potentially the game changing moment in the career of Calvert-Lewin, for it suggested the system he had been playing in previously was not right for his ability.
If Marco Silva wishes to push forward with a sole striker, then he made a massive mistake not targeting a hit man in the transfer window – the 21-year-old forward is perfect as a super sub who can hurt teams late on, just as long as he has someone alongside him.
At the moment, Cenk Tosun just about suffices. But for Everton to really get value from last weekend’s super-sub, an upgrade on the Turkish international is needed.
