da brdice: According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are targeting Bordeaux attacker Francois Kamano and are said to be readying a €15m (£13.8m) offer for his services.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Reds are yet to sign a single player who directly influences first-team proceedings this summer.
Only teenage duo Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg, as well as 35-year-old keeper Andy Lonergan, have been signed by the European Champions in what has been a quiet window so far.
Kamano had a fairly impressive 2018/19 campaign with 10 goals and an assist in 29 Ligue 1 starts for Bordeaux, whilst he also scored for Guinea at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations – the 23-year-old netted three times in the qualification rounds of the tournament, too.
Why do Liverpool want him?
Intriguingly, the Bordeaux forward usually plays either in the middle of the attack or on the left.
Whilst this would hand Jurgen Klopp a handy versatile option, Divock Origi can also play in a left forward role or as a centre-forward, and the Belgian himself even struggles for game time with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ahead of him in the attacking positions.
The former Lille man only managed 12 Premier League appearances last season, with the fact that he suffered no injuries throughout the campaign evidence that Klopp’s first choice front three kept him on the sidelines.
Additionally, with Rhian Brewster set to be handed a more involved role in 2019/20, it’s a challenge to figure out just why the Reds would want to sign Kamano, and how they would use him if they did bring him to Anfield.
The initial signs are that he would struggle for game time and simply sit on the sidelines, with Origi on hand to step in if any injuries occur whilst Brewster would also be available.
This would be a very strange signing if the Merseysiders got it over the line.
